Campus Bay Developers Donate $10,000 to Fund Richmond Youth Organizations

March 28, 2008

RICHMOND – Cherokee, the owners of the 87-acre Campus Bay property in Richmond, and its development partner, Brooks Street, have donated $10,000 to fund community youth organizations in Richmond, the companies announced today. The City of Richmond’s YouthWORKS program and Richmond Little League each received $5,000 from the community-minded companies.

“Cherokee and Brooks Street’s support of Little League in Richmond will help provide the community with an exceptional program this year,” said Don Lau, Vice President of the West Contra Costa YMCA. “We truly appreciate their involvement on behalf of Richmond’s youth.”

Richmond Little League, which is supported by the YMCA, the Richmond Police Activities League, the City of Richmond and community volunteers, depends on support from community-focused companies because it only charges players a minimal fee and often waives the fee altogether. The donation from Cherokee and Brooks Street will cover insurance, equipment, officials, and overall operating costs.

“Community-based programs like YouthWORKS take vision, patience and perseverance in order to succeed.   Cherokee and Brooks Street’s work on the Campus Bay project shows that they have all three of these qualities,” said Sal Vaca, Director of YouthWORKS.  “We thank them for their very generous support of the 2008 Summer Employment program.”

“These programs represent the very best of Richmond,” stated Jason Keadjian, spokesperson for Brooks Street. “Year after year these programs continue to grow and serve as vital resource for young people and families. We are proud to support our community.”

Located between Meade Street and the Bay Trail, just south of I-580, the Campus Bay represents an important opportunity to clean up and transform a key area in the City of Richmond into a new resource for the community. The Campus Bay property is being cleaned up to address more than a century of industrial use. The cleanup is being designed to protect human health and the environment, and support a broad range of uses that will bring jobs, businesses and other benefits to the people of Richmond. The redevelopment of Campus Bay is being guided by responsible and sustainable planning practices and a commitment to the protection of the environment and the safety of the community.
